The Foodhallen Amsterdam

In Oud-West is the beautiful old streetcar depot De Hallen. This piece of industrial heritage has been transformed into a hip location that houses eateries, shops, a cinema, a hotel, a library and much more. The Foodhallen Amsterdam is part of De Hallen and a true gathering place for Amsterdam food.

History of Foodhallen Amsterdam

De Hallen was built between 1901 and 1928 as a streetcar depot for the storage and maintenance of the electric streetcars that have been running in Amsterdam since 1900. The building consists of seven halls and a carpentry and painting workshop. The central hall, which runs from Tollenstraat to Ten Katemarkt, was where the streetcars entered. From that hall, the streetcars were driven into the correct side hall by turntables. These halls are now used for the library (Hall 1), De Filmhallen (Hall 2), De Foodhallen Amsterdam (Hall 3), De Hallen Studios (Hall 4) and Denim City (Hall 5). With the growth of the city of Amsterdam, more and more streetcars came and De Hallen became too small. After an expansion, the storage of the streetcars was moved in 1932 to the large streetcar depot in Amsterdam-Zuid. From then on, De Hallen was only used as a workshop. The further development of the streetcar led to the definitive closure of the De Hallen streetcar depot in 1996. The streetcars had become too big for the depot in the middle of the city. After years of vacancy, the building was finally renovated. Renovated De Hallen were officially opened on February 5, 2015.
