The Amsterdam social life

Amsterdam social life takes place both indoors and outdoors, usually depending on the sometimes rather fickle Dutch weather. Is the weather nice? Then the Amsterdammers are sitting in the park or by the water. Is it cold and rainy? Then the social life moves to the cafes and bars.

To the park

The best place to experience and view the social life of Amsterdammers is the park. With the first rays of sunshine, Amsterdam residents get out of their homes and head to the park to have a picnic, go for a walk, sit under a tree with a book, or just do nothing. Popular parks are Vondelpark, Westerpark, Oosterpark and Sarphatipark.

Beach and water

When the sun shows its face in the summer and the temperatures rise, the people of Amsterdam head for the beach and water. Swimming in natural water is possible at various places in and around Amsterdam. Nice places in the city where you can swim safely are the Diemerpark, the Sloterplas, the Amsterdamse Bos and the Nieuwe Meer. You don't have to leave Amsterdam for the real beach feeling. In the summer months, the city beaches are a wonderful place to socialize. For example, take a look at Strand Zuid, Pllek or Kaap.

Brown cafes

When you walk through the streets of Amsterdam, you come across a lot of them: brown cafes. These kinds of cafes emerged in people's living rooms at the beginning of the 19th century. For many people it was a way to earn some extra money. The brown cafes still have that homely atmosphere today. The cafes are called brown cafes because the interior consists of dark brown wood: the floor, tables, paneling and bar, everything in these cafes is made of wood. For many Amsterdammers, the brown café is still a place where social life takes place. There are many lovely brown cafes in Amsterdam, you never have to look far for a nice place. Two cafes with a special history are Café Slijterij Oosterling, whose building from 1735 was in the hands of the VOC for many years, and Café 't Papeneiland, which was connected by a tunnel to a Catholic shelter in the seventeenth century.

Play games

Amsterdammers like to combine a snack and a drink with a game. Serious and less serious conversations are held around the pool tables of The Poolbar while enjoying a beer. At Mooie Boules you combine street food with a game of jeu de boules. For the true game fanatic, there is the TonTon Club, an arcade where you can find your inner child all over again.
