Shopping in the Grachtengordel
The canals around the city center of Amsterdam was created when there was a need for more living space in the city in the seventeenth century. The canals had to drain the water around the city so that the land became habitable. In addition, the canals were important for the import and export of goods. Four hundred years ago, the area that is now called The 9 Streets was bustling with crafts, trade and culture. The 9 Streets Amsterdam is therefore full of authentic canal houses and shophouses. You will even find the Grachtenmuseum, where you can learn everything about the Amsterdam canals. The area is now on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Shopping in The 9 Streets Amsterdam is therefore a special shopping experience!
The name 'The 9 Streets' did not yet exist in the seventeenth century. The name came into existence in the 1990s. The entrepreneurs in the area decided to join forces and jointly market themselves as a shopping area, as a counterpart to the Jordaan. Since then, the area has continued to develop and has become one of Amsterdam's most popular shopping areas. It has even been used as the setting for the movie Ocean's Twelve starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Matt Damon.
