In the Van Gogh Museum you can discover everything about the life and work of the world-famous painter Vincent van Gogh. The collection consists of paintings, drawings and letters by Van Gogh, but works by his predecessors and contemporaries are also on display at the museum.
Vincent van Gogh was born in the Brabant village of Zundert on March 30, 1853. After doing several jobs that he didn't like, he decided to focus on being an artist. He improved his drawing and painting technique and is inspired by the peasant life.
In 1886 Vincent goes to live with his brother Theo in Paris. There he gets to know artists such as Claude Monet, Paul Gaugain and Camille Pissarro. His paintings become more and more colorful and he develops his signature style with short brushstrokes.
After two years, Van Gogh leaves for Arles, in Provence. It is here that his mental health deteriorates and he cuts off his own ear, but this is also the period in which he makes some of his most famous paintings. During this period, Van Gogh painted his famous Sunflowers.
In May 1889 Vincent van Gogh voluntarily admitted himself to a psychiatric institution in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Here, too, he continues to paint, inspired by the unusual light and colors of the surroundings. After a year in the institution, he left for the village of Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris. Here he committed suicide in July 1890.
The Van Gogh Museum opens its doors in 1973 with the aim of making Van Gogh's legacy accessible to everyone at all times. The collection consists of 200 paintings, 580 drawings and 750 letters from Van Gogh. You walk along the works in chronological order so that you can follow the development of Vincent van Gogh.
In addition to the works of art by Vincent van Gogh himself, works by his contemporaries and by artists who inspired Van Gogh are also on display.
