After sunset, there is still a whole world to discover in Amsterdam. There are plenty of cinemas, theaters, restaurants, concert halls and night clubs where you can embrace the nightlife of Amsterdam. Or opt for a candle light cruise on the canals and admire the city by night.
There are several cinemas in the center of Amsterdam. Two special cinemas that are more than worth a visit are the Royal Theater Tuschinski and the Filmhallen.
Royal Theater Tuschinski was opened in 1921 by the Polish clothing maker Abraham Tuschinski. He already owned a few cinemas in Rotterdam, but he wanted to set up a cinema in Amsterdam that was so special that it would surpass all other theaters in Amsterdam. The plan succeeded, because in 2021 Tuschinski was voted the most beautiful cinema in the world. Tuschinski is near Rembrandtplein, one of the most popular places to enjoy nightlife in Amsterdam.
The FilmHallen is a cinema in the monumental streetcar depot in Amsterdam Oud-West. After a thorough renovation, De Hallen are now a meeting place full of art and culture, including the nine screening rooms of the cinema. A special room is the Parisien room, where the authentic art deco interior of the Parisien auditorium of the old film museum in Vondelpark has found a new home.
You don't have to look far in Amsterdam for an evening at the theatre. The most famous theater in Amsterdam (and in the Netherlands) is the Royal Theater Carré. The theater on the river Amstel was opened in 1887 by circus director Oscar Carré and has since received many national and international celebrities. To this day, the beautiful theater is a place to enjoy drama, musical, ballet, cabaret, comedy, music and many more performing arts.
There is no shortage of music in the nightlife of Amsterdam. In many cafes there is live music in the evenings and there are several music venues in the city.
Pop stages De Melkweg and Paradiso both started out as cultural youth centres. Nowadays you can go there for concerts, club nights, dance parties, comedy and much more. Both pop venues have found accommodation in a special building: De Melkweg in an old milk factory on the canals and Paradiso in an old church building.
Since 1886, the Concertgebouw has been the place to go to listen to classical music. Big names such as Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and even Sting have performed in the beautiful Great Hall. The Concertgebouw Orchestra is regarded as one of the best orchestras in the world.
If you want to discover the nightlife of Amsterdam while dancing, it is best to go to Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein. These are the largest entertainment areas of the city and here you will find many night clubs.
